Hello, My name is Gavin York and I got into snooker coaching through my deep interest and desire to improve my own game. During my teens and early twenties I studied every snooker book I could get my hands on and listened to the different thoughts of all the top snooker coaches. I spent hours trying different techniques and as my game improved I started to get asked questions by other players in the club. It was at this time that I decided that I would love to coach snooker as a profession. I decided that I wanted to do it properly and so I went off and qualified as a World Snooker Coach and passed my DBS checks so that I could work with players of all ages.
As time went on I continued to learn more about the game. I took further qualifications and sought advice from other top coaches about the methods and techniques they employed. Although I continued to play I now had a wife and two children and so I concentrated on my coaching. I started up a junior club and many of the players grew up to become century break players. I also ran local snooker tournaments and the Northampton Snooker League grew in size.
In 2014 I had the chance to go and live in China. My family and I spent a year living in Tianjin, China. Whilst we were there I got a job at the Snooker Academy in Beijing. I worked with the CBSA to teach and qualify new snooker coaches. I was responsible for building and delivering the snooker coaching curriculum. Obviously I had a lovely Chinese interpreter who helped with the delivery of these courses. I also worked at the academy in Beijing coaching the newest young Chinese players. This was a very exciting time and I enjoyed my time in China.
In the summer of 2015 we returned from China. On my return I originally took a break from coaching. However when I did return I realised that mindset and mental toughness played a much bigger part in the game than I had realised, especially at the elite level. As a result I studied Sports Psychology using NLP and became a Sports NLP Practioner. Since then I have also completed a MSc in Psychology and I am currently studying a MSc in Sports and Exercise Psychology.
I now believe that I am in a better position than ever to help players with their snooker. Whatever your level of play then there is always room to improve and if you have the motivation then I can help you to fulfill your potential. Please feel free to get in touch and we can have a no obligation chat.
